For my system, I have a really good Canon scanner because I needed it to scan negatives dating back to the 1920's, and it is only used for photo work. I also have 2 HP photosmart printers, which have mostly been used only for printing photos (used my HP laser printer for regular print jobs until it died).

Now... my 12 year old DD has been doing an excessive amount of drawing and wanted us to find her a good scanner so she could finish her work using PSE4. We ended up getting her an HP all-in-one as it was cheaper, and suitable for her needs. It does not scan negatives or 3D items, but it does scan at 600dpi for her artwork, and prints basic photo quality if she needs it.

What it boils down to, is buy a really good brand like Canon or HP, and you will probably be happy.
