It looks like you have had some great answers. I would agree and recommend that you should alwasy save your photos to your hard drive first and you can do that either by transferring direct using your camera's USb or using a card reader (recommended because then you save on battery life)
The process is very simple - if you need it there is a step by step visual tutorial here on using XP to transfer and save images
