I have the 8400F, but these hints should help.
Scan at 600dpi with the output size being what you want to print them at.
Scan as a color photograph (convert later in your graphics program)
Save the file as a TIF if you can to preserve compression.

Basically, when I scan, I import into CS2 and do all adjustments there because I can zoom in to see better as well as make the tiniest adjustments.

The other thing to think about, is that the print quality of the book itself may not be the best, so you may have to clean up the scanned image to compensate.
