The important thing si to make sure your canvas size is correct to start with so not only should your page be at 12x12 it should be at 300ppi resolution.
You may then find that your pictures wont be so huge unless you have a very large MP camera.
You can resize your pictures after dragging them on the canvas to whatever you like using the resize handles.
