My other scanner - a HP - has an addon attachment and it works great for slides and negatives.. just plug it in the back and hit the scan button. I'm not sure if the built in ones are better or not since both scanners provide the same results... the HP cost me 3x the canon though and the canon is just as good (and actually better thanks to the awesome driver - the HP driver is mediocre at best).
