That is typically correct.. On full Auto modes (not good to use really), you cannot turn off the flash. The creative modes are also quite restrictive and usually should be avoided (you can get the same settings buy setting them manually from the menus). Best to use A or S modes (P if you must) and stay off Auto... you did buy a DSLR afterall.. Good Luck.
