Sunfire, I'm pretty new here so I don't feel entirely qualified to answer questions : ), but as I understand it, you just pick a layout that inspires you. You can use the "sketch", the colors, or really any part of a layout that catches your eye (or a combination of layouts even) like a cool idea for an embellishment. It doesn't have to be (and probably shouldn't be) an exact copy.
