I have two suggestions for you. The first is that surely out of 8-10 pictures, there are some duplicates when it comes to telling the story behind the picture or of your son. I'm sure they are all adorable, but choosing just the two or three BEST that either really showcase his personality or the story if there is one, i.e. birthday party, behind the photos, will leave you room on your page for journaling, elements, and all the other fun things that transform it from 'just' a photo to a work of (he)art.
My other suggestion is to have your other photos burned to CD/DVD and eventually printed off and put into photo albums. The photos I have in photo albums are untouched and 'bad' while the photos on my layouts are often retouched, tweaked, and manipulated within an inch of their lives.
