On the Canon S2 IS, if you want to have the flash available, you must open it up. It is just above the viewfinder. Pull it up.
There are lots of little symbols that show on the LCD monitor or in the viewfinder, depending on how you have the display set. These will tell you if something is or is not set properly for the shot. You will be able to find out what they all mean by looking at your manual.
I love my S2 IS, but it did take some time with the camera and the manual before I had it figured out.
