No you are right if a bold version of the font is not included with the font, then you would need to rasterized the font and increase the size yourself. I believe this is done this way because when printing the font for publications you need to have a true font. Once you rasterize the font your can right click on the font icon in your layers palette then go to Select-Modify-Expand and put in the number of pixels you want to enlarge the font. Then fill with the color you want. You could also stroke the front rather than expanding the selection. Just another approach.
