Most definately - to run efficiently your computers hard drive should never be more than 2/3 full. So if you are above that then removing some of that will make a differenece to your system. You do get what you pay for so stick to well known brands for external memory units and have a bit of a look at reviews for brands before you go ahead and by one. I chose seagate after a look around.
Having said that if iyour drive is still only half full or so you arent going to see much of a difference. In that case what you need is more RAM rather than physical memory - a GB iwll make a big difference - more if you can afford it. Just check how much your computer can take.
