Also when you Edit>Define pattern, it makes only a temp pattern in the palette. You'll need to use the Preset Manager to make a permanent .pat file you can load later.
Also there is a filter called the Texturizer that makes use of the Textures folder you mentioned, but those files in there need to be grayscale .psd files only. I've some some very nice jpg patterns on the 'net that work well here, but you'll need to convert them first.
