alphabets and summary?s

Hi- I am still working on my first page. I got a background and imported some pics but now am working on letters. I downloaded a tag alphabet but can't figure out how to use 1 letter at a time. I get the page w/ all the letters but can't select 1 individual letter (it selects all the letters on the page) so I tried to crop figuring I'd open the full page and crop each letter individually- no luck either. Can someone tell me how to do this?

Also, I want to make sure I am doing this right.... for my pictures I imported a pic. from my camera, cropped it and saved the cropped image as a .jpg. I opened a new file imported my next pic, cropped and saved as a .jpg. I did this until I had all my images saved in a folder that I needed for the page. I then imported my background into a new file and cropped it and brought the previously modified pics into this file as new layers. This is the file I am working with. I saved it as a .ufo. When the page is completed, I will save as a .jpg & a .ufo. Are these steps I am taking and the way I am saving correct?

Can I crop a shape other than the predefined circle, rectangle etc. For instance, there is a tutorial to make an egg shape, I did that and then wanted to crop a picture so that it was that same egg shape. I couldn't get it to do that, is it possible?

Finally, as far as the pixel size- if I import something should I just automatically define it at 300. If I do that, then crop and then enlarge, will it keep it at 300? I realize the pixel thing is really important but am having trouble understanding how to apply it. When I imported my background page, it came in at 3600x3600 so I assumed that was 12x12; I needed 8x10 so told the computer to crop to 2400x3000 assuming that would make it 8x10- I know I will not have to enlarge the page so I was not concerned about doing that. I don't get how to do it with other images such as a pic from a camera that I will crop then resize.

I'd appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks for your time...
Jill
