The first thing I do is go through and hand check every one of the png files for any stray pixels, etc. There are 2 schools of thought on how big the zips should be. Some put the whole kit regardless of size in one zip. Others split the kit up into smaller zips so that those on dial up can download one smaller zip at a time. Join the promos4digiscrappers yahoo group as mant design sites put out calls for designers on them. There is one call that just came out this week. You can go from site to site and many of them will post their "becoming a designer" info, or whether or not they are accepting new designers, etc. And be patient. I know from personal experience that it can be very tempting to take the first site that offers you a spot. Just make sure that it is where you want to be.
