duplicate the object you want to add a shadow to and add teh shadow. Group the two copies. If later you wnat to go back and change teh shadow you can just ungroup, delete the top shadowed duplicate and have the original underneath to add a shadow to again .

Ya know, I'm getting pretty good with DIP (just ask my DH about the laundry piled up
