PROGRAM BASIC: Loading and Using Brushes

This tutorial will teach you how to load and use brushes in Photoshop 7.0.

Step 1: So, you have found these great brushes and wish to load them into Photoshop.  You probably received them in a Zipped file, so extract them.  For organization and credit references, I would create a separate folder called Brushes and then create subfolders with the name of the creator (I use the URL address as my folder name, just as a personal reference).  For example, when I want to load my truly-sarah brushes, I extract them into a folder I created called Brushes > httptruly-sarah.comMain.htm.  This way, I know who to credit in my layout and I know where to find my downloaded brushes. 

Step 2: Now open a document or create a new one where you wish to use the brush. 

Step 3: To load the new brush, first select the brush tool from the detachable Tools Menu.

Step 4: Using your mouse, click on the brush as shown:

Step 5: Click on the arrow button at the top right-hand side of the drop-down brush list and select Load Brushes.

Step 6: Find the file where you have placed the brush and select Load.

The brushes you just loaded will be appended to bottom of your brush list, so you will have to scroll down to see them.

Step 7: Select one of the brushes you just loaded from the bottom of the brush list.  In this case, I choose the butterfly brush.

You may change the size of your brush by adjusting the Master Diameter; just move the slider to your desired pixel size. 

For those of you wanting to change more than just the size of your brush, from the top menu, select Window > Brushes.  The Brushes Window will appear.  Select Brush Tip Shape, see below, and you can now experiment:

Step 8:  Click on your document with the brush.  The brush should then “stamp” onto your paper.

Note:  You may want to create a new layer to place the brush on.
