One of my recent layouts featured a round tag with a photo of my daughter and nieces inserted into the tag. I got several Private Messages from curious members asking me how I “cut” the photo out to fit the tag perfectly.
The use of Photoshop’s “Layer Mask” feature makes this task a snap! Follow along and I’ll show you exactly how to recreate this look in your own layouts.
1. Begin by opening the file containing your round tag element.
2. Open the file containing your photo and drag the photo into the document containing the tag element. Place the photo on a layer under the tag element layer as shown below:
I like to reduce the opacity of the tag layer to approximately 50-60% so that I can see my photo underneath it, then I resize and position the photo as I want it to appear. Be sure to return the tag opacity to 100% before going on to the next step.
3. Make sure you have selected the layer containing the tag element. (It should be highlighted in your Layers Palette.) Using the magic wand tool from the toolbox, click on the white “paper” inside the tag rim (I usually set my magic wand tolerance to a lower setting such as 10 to be sure that my selection doesn’t pick up any of the lighter colors in the metal tag rim.)
4. With the “marching ants” selection still active on the tag layer, select the layer containing your photo in the Layers Palette by clicking on it.
5. Click on the “Add Layer Mask” icon on the bottom of your Layers Palette. You should see an image on the layer containing the photo in your Layers Palette indicating that the photo has been masked as shown below.
6. Now drag the photo layer above the tag layer on your Layers Palette and you’ll see the photo fits perfectly inside the rim of your tag!
