If you thought that making text conform to a shape in PSCS2 was difficult it really isn’t! In just a few steps you will be creating unique text elements for your layout.
Launch Photoshop and create a blank canvas or existing layout.
For clarity this tutorial uses a 4inch x 4inch transparent canvas.
From the Tool Palette choose the Custom Shape Tool
In the Options bar, select the Paths Tool
Select a custom shape – in this case the heart.
Click and drag to draw the heart (Remember to hold down SHIFT as you drag if you don’t want the shape distorted)
In the layers palette select the Paths tab and ensure your Work Path is selected
Select the Text tool from the Tools palette
On the Options bar, select a font, size and color –
Size is a major contributor to how well you text fills the shape so be prepared to change it. Start with a smaller size. I have also found that Center alignment tends to work better, particularly with curved shapes.
Click within the shape and begin typing your text – you can use copy and paste to repeat a phrase
You can also change leading, letter spacing and other variable using the character palette
When you are happy with the texts distribution, click on an area of the Paths palette to clear the selection and click the Layers tab
The shaped text remains editable.
You can rasterize the layer if preferred
You don’t have to use custom shapes – here I used custom shapes and a shape drawn with the pen tool to create some mouse ears and fill it with text
Note – the text may look a little fuzzy on screen but it will print fine
