TECHNIQUE: High Key Photo Effects

High key effects are suitable for portraits, adding dramatic impact or rescuing an otherwise bland image.

Select and open the photo. Create a duplicate to work with. (Image>Duplicate)


Choose Image> Adjustments> Levels and push the White point slider to the left. How much you push depends on the photo and the look you are trying to achieve.


Duplicate the layer (CTL+J) and change the blend to Multiply


Select the Eraser and erase areas you did not want to emphasise


Merge the layers and use the dodge and burn tools to clean up the image


To create the black and white high key effect, desaturate (Image> Adjustments> Desaturate) and increase the contrast (Image> Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast)
