While using a path to stitch on the edge of an item is popular method, you can also work with selections and paths to stitch within the borders of an element and around the element. Of course you don’t necessarily have to use a stitch, you can use any brush you wish. If you are choosing to stitch make sure you have a stitching brush available.
This tutorial is written using PSCS2 but may work with earlier versions.
Open a suitable element to the workspace.

Hold CTRL on the keyboard and click on the Layer thumbnail to create a selection shown by the marching ants. To stitch on the edge of the element continue to *Create a New Layer*

To stitch on the inside of the element, choose Modify > Contract and type in a pixel value. Then continue to *Create a New Layer*

To stitch around an object,
Choose Modify> Expand and type in a pixel value then continue to *Create a New Layer*

*Create a New Layer*

Click on the Paths tab ( if you cant see the Paths palette go to Windows and choose Paths)

Then from the bottom of the palette choose the make New Work path icon

Choose the Brush tool and then select a brush.

I’ve selected a basic stitching brush I made for the purpose of this tutorial so it stands out. Determine your choice of spacing, size, color and other details.

Ensure you select Shape Dynamics > Angle Jitter Control> Direction as shown.

On the Paths palette select the Stroke path with Brush icon

The brush will be applied to create stitching on the edges of the element.

Deselect the Work path layer by clicking anywhere in the layer palette

Switch back to the Layers Palette and the stitching layer will be evident in a new layer. (A black background has been added for illustration purposes)

If you chose the Contract the Selection the result will be similar to this:

If you chose the expand the selection your result will be similar to this

You can now work with the stitching to add texture, holes etc. Try this tutorial with other types of brushes
