What Are Presets?
Essentially, a Preset is a type of script that defines the behavior, properties, or settings of a tool or a dialog. Many tools and dialogs already come equipped with a ready to use predefined Preset. Additionally, you can create and save your own Presets.

Where Are the Presets Located?
Most dialogs in Paint Shop Pro have a drop-down menu of Presets. For instance, when you create a new file (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+N), the drop-down menu of Presets is located at the top of the dialog window:

When you click the down-arrow for the Presets in the New Image dialog box, you will see a list of image sizes to choose from. This is helpful if you typically scrap in a particular size. By choosing the size from your Presets list, you eliminate the need to type in the image size and resolution each time.

Many of the Effects dialogs have ready to use Presets. Be sure to take a peek at any of the drop down menus to see what is available. (Following are examples for the Drop Shadow dialog and the Brush Strokes dialog.)

Most of the Tools in Paint Shop Pro also have Presets which determine how a particular tool will perform. When you select a Tool (for instance the Paint Brush) you will see the Presets located on the left side of your Tool Options bar.

When you click the down-arrow button, you will see the ready to use Presets for that tool.

Again, be sure to look at each of the Presets for each tool to see what is available.

How Do I Design and Save My Own Preset?

You’ve picked out THE perfect settings for the grunge look you’ve wanted to achieve and now you want to save the settings for future projects. Saving the Preset is easy! Simply click on the Presets for that tool and click the Save button.

A dialog box will open, prompting you to name your Preset. Enter a name and click OK.

The next time you want to use that same grunge-look Paint Brush, it will appear in your Presets.

As you can see, Presets are very beneficial in that they can help streamline your creative efforts and jumpstart your imagination. Be sure to explore all of the Presets that are available in Paint Shop Pro.

Have fun!
