This tutorial will show you how to create background paper with a gingham pattern in Paint Shop Pro X.
1. Begin by creating a new image (Ctrl+N), 0.5” x 0.5”, Resolution 300, Raster background and Transparent. Click OK. This will be your gingham pattern “swatch.”
2. Using the Flood Fill Tool (F), fill the background with a color of your choice. I used a medium sky blue (#6474f2) for the example.

3. Select the Rectangle Tool (G) and choose a contrasting background color. I used a blue a few shades darker than my original background color (#3849d2). Be sure the “Create on Vector” box is checked. Draw a vertical rectangle making sure the top and bottom edges fall outside of the swatch.

4. Your swatch should now have a vertical rectangle in a contrasting color. Again, be sure that the top and bottom edges of the rectangle fall outside of the swatch.

5. Center the rectangle on your canvas by selecting the Object Selection Tool (O). Click once on the rectangle to select it. Then click the Center in Canvas button on the Tool Options bar.

6. The rectangle should now be centered both horizontally and vertically on your canvas.

7. Leave this swatch open for now.
8. Create a new file (Ctrl+N), this time 12” x 12” (or whatever size you choose), 300 resolution, Raster background and Transparent. Click OK.

9. Select the Flood Fill Tool (F).
10. In the Materials palette, click once on the foreground color. Switch to the Pattern tab.

11. Click on the drop down arrow and look for the swatch you just created. Click on the swatch and click OK.

12. Flood fill the background with your pattern.

13. Create a new Raster Layer (Layers > New Raster Layer). Change the Opacity to 50. Click OK.

14. Click on the foreground color on the Materials palette and change the angle to 90. Click OK.

15. Flood fill the new Raster layer you just created. Merge all layers and save. You now have your own gingham background paper!

Be sure to experiment with different color combinations, stripe sizes and opacities.

Have fun!
