This tutorial will show you how to create ric rac (or a zigzag style ribbon) in Paint Shop Pro X.

1. Begin by creating a new layout at 300 dpi and a transparent background. The size will depend on how wide you want your ric rac element. (File > New)

2. Switch to the Rectangle Tool (keyboard shortcut: G). Select the background color you want the ric rac to be. Leave the foreground color transparent.
3. Using the Rectangle Tool, draw a rectangle a little wider than your layout and about one-half inch tall.

4. If you created the rectangle as a Vector, convert it to a Raster Layer (right-click on Vector Layer and click on Convert to Raster Layer).
5. Now add the ric rac effect by clicking on the Effects menu. Click on Distortion Effects then choose Wave.

6. The Wave dialog box will pop up. Experiment with the Vertical Displacement values if your ric rac is horizontal (as in the example). If your ric rac is vertical, experiment with the Horizontal Displacement values. Edge mode should be Transparent. When you have the look you want, click OK.

7. You can now add texture and an inner bevel to give the ric rac more depth.

8. Save the ric rac element as a .PNG file and you can now use it on future scrapbook projects. Be sure to experiment with different textures and bevels for different looks. Try adding noise for variety. The glittery sample above was made by adding noise at a value of 45 then adding a narrow inner bevel. Have fun!
