This tutorial will show you how to
create a scratched effect on your background paper using Paint Shop Pro 9.0.
1. Begin by creating a new file
(keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+N) with a transparent background.
2. Using the Flood Fill Tool
(keyboard shortcut: F), fill this layer with a color of your choice (this will
be the color of the scratches). For the example, I have filled the background
with white.
3. Open the background paper that
you would like to add scratches to and copy it (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+C).
4. Return to your original layout
and paste the background paper onto a new layer (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+L).
You should now have two layers: the bottom layer contains the solid color (which
will be the color of your scratches) and the top layer contains your background
paper.
5. Activate the Eraser Tool
(keyboard shortcut: X) and choose a very small size round brush. The hardness
and opacity should be low values as well but will depend on the look you
desire. For the example, I have used the following settings for the Eraser
Tool:
6. Be sure the background paper
layer is active and begin making random “scratches”, removing areas of the paper
to reveal the solid color underneath. Continue erasing or “scratching” until
the desired look is achieved. You may need to change your eraser size, opacity,
etc. to vary the look.
7. When you have achieved the look
you desire, you might want to use your Dodge Tool (keyboard shortcut: J) to
lighten up the edges of your paper. Use a soft brush with a high opacity.
Begin dodging the areas containing the most scratches.
8. Merge all layers when the desired
scratched effect is achieved and save the file to use for future projects. Be
sure to experiment with different brush tips, opacities, densities, etc. for
varied effects.
