Scratched and grunge effects are popular in digital scrapbooking. This tutorial describes one method for creating scratch effects in DIP. A variation can be found here Creating Scratch effects Variation 1

File> New Create a new canvas of your desired size eg 8x8

Insert shape>Square

With the square selected,  choose Format > Resize Object to Fit Canvas > Stretch to fit

Remove the line.

Fill the square with the color black

Select Edit> Duplicate to make a copy of the square but change the color and fill with white.

Select the white square and go to Effects> Transparency> Transparency brush

Make adjustments to the brush. Set the brush size at minimum size of 2 or as preferred, select hard edge and 100% opacity.

Scratch by dragging the brush as desired.

Go to Edit > Flatten all objects

Choose the Magic Wand tool and then select any area of white. Ensure you have Contiguous unchecked and the Tolerance at 0

Select Edit > Delete

Click on the object tool  and then anywhere on the canvas to finish the task.

Select the scratches and choose Effects > Fill with color or texture and choose black.

Save this file to use again when required. Ensure you save as png+ for your own use.

Place on the background you want to be scratched and adjust color or transparency to get the effect you want. It works best when you use Effects > Fill with color or texture >More solid color choices and then use the eyedropper to match the predominate color of your paper, then use the inner ball to manipulate the color to your preference.
