This tutorial shows how to create either a flat or rippled grosgrain ribbon in PSE.

  1. Open a new file that is 12 inches tall, .5 inches wide and a resolution of 300 dpi.
  2. Set your foreground color to be the basic color of your ribbon and the background color to a slightly darker version of the foreground color. For this example I set the foreground to #F49AC1 and the background to D97BA4.
  3. Select the entire layer (CRTL+A) and fill it with the foreground color.
  4. Switch the foreground and background colors (keyboard shortcut: X).
  5. Create a new layer (keyboard shortcut: CTRL+SHIFT+N)
  6. Open the Brush tool. Select the diameter 19 hard round brush and set the brush opacity to 70%.
  7. Hold down the SHIFT key and drag the brush along both sides of the ribbon. Holding down the SHIFT key forces you to draw just vertical or horizontal lines.
  8. Add a Simple Inner Bevel to the brushed edges. Adjust the size of the bevel if desired. I used an size 18 pixel bevel in the example.
  9. Make the main part of the ribbon the active layer and select Filter> Sketch> Halftone Pattern from the main tool bar. Set the pattern type to Lines with a size of 3 and a contrast of 20.
  10. You can stop now and use your flat grosgrain ribbon or continue on to add a ripple to your ribbon.

  11. Rotate the entire image 90 degrees (Image> Rotate> 90° Right)
  12. Set the foreground color to white.
  13. Open the Gradient tool.
  14. Click the down arrow next to the sample gradient and then the right arrow.
  15. From the list of gradient sets, select Special Effects.
  16. From the Special Effects gradients, select Soft Stripes.
  17. On a new layer, loosely click on the left end and then the right end of the ribbon.
  18. Change the gradient layer’s mode to multiply.

  19. Before taking your new ribbon into a layout make sure to flatten it (Layer> Flatten Image).
