* This tutorial is using centimetres as the unit of the measurement. This is largely because I have only ever used the metric system and found it difficult to create precise measurements with inches.
Create a custom document with idth 21cm and Height 27cm. 300pixels/inch. This height and width will fit within a standard 8.5x11 letter paper and an A4 standard paper.
Ensure you can see your ruler’s View> Rulers. For the purposes of this tutorial ensure that the rulers are using centimeters. You can change this at any time by right clicking on the ruler and selecting the measurement unit.
Start by creating guidelines to help define sections of the envelope.
Go to View> New Guide. With Vertical selected, enter 3 and select OK. This creates a guide in the position we have specified.
Go to View> New Guide and with vertical selected type in 18 and select OK
You should see two guides running the length of your paper, 3 cm in from each edge.
Go to View> New Guide. With Horizontal selected, enter 1 and select OK. This creates a guide in the position we have specified.
Go to View> New Guide and with Horizontal selected type in 26 and select OK.
You should see two guides running the length of your paper, 3 cm in from each edge and 2 lines the width each 1cm from the edge.
We need to divide the envelope into three panels using the guides
Go to View> New Guide. With Horizontal selected, enter 6 and select OK. This creates a guide in the position we have specified, go to View> New Guide and with horizontal selected enter 17. This creates 3 panels.
Finally go to View> New Guide. With Vertical selected, enter 1 and select OK. Go to View> New Guide. With Vertical selected, enter 20 and select OK.
We now have the basic template for our envelope ready to fill the panels.
Create a new layer by clicking on the new layer icon on the layers palette.
We are going to use the marquee tool to define and fill the three main panels of the envelope.
Select any color for the foreground, and then select the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Move your cursor to the intersecting lines for the first panel. Click and drag out the marquee to the guidelines. Then use ALT+Backspace to fill the marquee with a solid color.
Create a new layer, choose a new foreground color and then repeat this step for the bottom panel.
The envelope needs flaps on the middle section for closure for which we have created the flaps with the second set of guidelines.
Create a new layer, choose a new foreground color. Move your cursor to the intersecting lines for the first panel. Click and drag out the marquee to the guidelines. Then use ALT+Backspace to fill the marquee with a solid color.
Save this in PSD as a basic envy template.
Make a duplicate Image> Duplicate. You can close the original file to protect it.
Now its time to have a bit of fun with the envelope design.
Treat this template as an oddly shaped scrapbook layout. The middle panel (green) will be the front of the envelope - though keep in mind the tabs at each side will not be seen.
When designing the top and bottom panels you will need to ensure your design and any text is rotated so it will appear upside down as you design, to allow for when you fold the envelope. You should also keep in mind the amount of overlap on the bottom panel once the top panel is adhered to seal the envelope.
Print on a medium weight paper – a semi gloss works well as it has a nice finish as well as being a medium weight paper. Fold each panel and side tabs. Apply glue to side tabs and seal the bottom flap.
Final project: Front and back
