Start by opening the image of the photo or paper you wish to use, create a new layer.
In your materials palette also choose to use a Texture Pattern. I have found that the textures with more transparency works better then say a solid material texture. The reason we would want to use Texture while painting with brush tips is that it automatically gives our brushes a worn and distressed look that you can see right away while you are painting it on.

Choose a brush tip that you would like to use, choose the color to use with your brush.
Different brushes and variance settings will have a big effect on your outcome. This just takes playing and practicing until you get the best combinations of both the brush tip and the brush variance settings.
Adjust the Brush variance settings so that your brush tip jumps and scatters when you paint.

On the new layer that you created paint with your brush around the edges. You can either just paint constantly with your brush or start and stop around the edges to get a more varied overlay pattern.

Until you have something like this. Adjust the blend mode if desired.
Create another new layer, choose another brush tip and repeat the step above for a second layer of an edge overlay.

I was able to create this overlay with a standard square brush tip with adjustments.
Textures used: Plant_leaves_01 and Paper Standard Directional
Using another brush tip I made and using the brush variances shown and choosing different texture patterns, I created this edge overlay.

Once you get a few of these edges done, you can save them a individual .png files and use them over and over again, use them with other overlays, recolor them and adjust them to use on your photo’s also.
