HYBRID: Swing Card

For this project you will need:
-Digital scrapbook kit to fit your card theme, I used Melissa Bennett’s “Party Palooza” and it’s awesome!
-6x12 piece of coordinating cardstock, scored in the middle to be your card base
-Scissors and paper trimmer
-hole punch and brad
-adhesive and miscellaneous embellishments

Getting Started: Create a 6x6 panel that will be the front of your card. You will need to make a shape that will “swing” revealing a message or picture underneath – I chose a ladybug to be my “swinging” piece, I used a half circle for my head and half of a upside down heart for body pieces. Because my ladybug was going to swing apart, I made sure that there was extra overlap of all three pieces where I would punch my hole and insert the brad. To “cover” my ladybug pieces with paper, I placed my paper above the body shape layer and created a clipping mask and merged the 2 layers together. You will need to do this for each piece of your “swing”. Now I add what I want to be behind my “swing”, I chose “Happy Birthday”. Size it so that it is covered by the “swing” and will be visible when the “swing” swings.
Here’s how my card looks…
Ready to Print: Now that our card front is finished we need to move stuff around to print everything out. Open a new letter size document, copy all layers from your original 6x6 card document into the letter size document. Now group everything but the “swing” portion (hold the ctrl key while clicking on each layer, when each layer you want grouped is highlighted, hit ctrl +g, those layers should now be in a folder together in the layers palette) and move the card panel to the upper left corner. Now you want to move each piece of your “swing” away from each other so you can cut them out.
This is how my document looks, ready to print…
Now print out your page. Trim card front and cut out “swing” pieces.
Here’s all my goodies, cut out and ready to assemble.
Assemble the Swing: Lay the “swing” pieces together as they will be when closed on the card and carefully punch a hole through all layers and insert a brad.
Now adhere “swing” into proper position on the card. I used a “pop” dot to give a little extra depth. But be careful that you keep adhesive very close to top so that the wings can spread all the way apart. I also trimmed the top of my wings very close to the brad to give extra room. NOTE: My piece has 3 pieces with the one on top being able to be adhered to my card front. If your “swing” piece only has 1 or 2 parts, you’ll have to punch a hole in your card front in the proper position and insert the brad through the “swing” piece(s) and the card front.
Now added embellishments of your choice. I added glitter glue “antennae” and eyes. You’re done. A pretty easy way to turn a simple card into a WOW card.
