ELEMENT: Create an Eyelet

Create a new document at 1 x 1 inch 300ppi


Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool by right clicking on the small arrow to access the marquee tools.


On the Options bar have New Selection chosen, Feather at 0 and choose Fixed Size from the Style drop down. Enter .7 in the height and width boxes


Hold down SHIFT and click inside the document, and the selection will be create automatically – click near the top left hand corner – it doesn’t matter if the selection is not central as long as it is not outside the boundaries of the document.


Press D on your keyboard to restore the default black and white colors and then use ALT+ Backspace to fill the circle with black.


Use CTRL+ J to make a copy of the circle. CTRL and click on the image thumbnail to make a selection of the new circle and choose CTRL+ backspace to fill with white.


Select the move tool and if required check the box on the options bar to show the Transform Controls.
Now resize the white circle (hold done SHIFT to maintain proportion) that will become the hole of the eyelet. Apply the transformation by clicking on the Move Tool.


Now CTRL+ click on the thumbnail of the white circle to create a selection but select the black circle layer


Press delete and then select and delete the white circle layer.


This gives you the basic eyelet shape template, save as a PSD or PNG for use again.

Double click on the layer to open the Layer style dialogue.
Choose Gradient Overlay and use the following Structure settings:
Blend Mode: Normal; Opacity: 100%; Gradient should be black through to white; Style: Linear; Angle: 125 and Scale at 100%.


Next select Bevel and Emboss and use the following settings:
Style: Inner bevel; Technique: Smooth; Depth: 150%; Direction: Up; Size: 15; Soften: 1


Now select Contour and choose the contour: Ring


Choose Satin and use the following Structure settings: Blend Mode: Multiply; Opacity 23%; Distance 23; Size 40; Contour: Ring.


Now save this Layer style so you can use it again and then select OK. You can also make adjustments to the contour for example to create a different looking eyelet by editing the layer style next time you use it.

Permanently combine the layer style with the shape. Right click on the layer and choose Convert to Smart Object then right click on the layer again and choose Rasterize layer.


You can colorise the eyelet by using a color overlay


Alternatively add a pattern overlay to create a grunge or decorative look
