Select a ding or image.
This tutorial uses an image from Dover Publications 1500 Decorative Ornaments.

Set your foreground color to the color you wish it to be. I have chosen a cream R: 237 G: 236 B: 225

Create a new layer and fill it with your selected color. Alt+Backspace

Set your background color to a slightly darker shade of the foreground color. Here I’ve used R:228 G: 226 B: 207

Select Filter> Render> Fibers and increase the variance and strength to suit. Select OK

With this filled background selected, hold CTRL and click on the lace image thumbnail The marching ants will outline the image.

Select CTRL+J to create a new layer with the lace image filled with the background

Create a new layer and fill with any contrasting color, then drag it under the lace layer. This will enable you to better see your changes

Select the lace layer and right click to access the Blending Options palette
Select Stroke and make the following adjustments – Size: 2 (this setting does depend on intricacy of the design) Position: Outside; Blend Mode: Normal; Opacity: 100% and Fill Type: Color. Use your background color as the stroke color. (Click on the color swatch and use the eyedropper tool)

Select Bevel and Emboss
From the Style drop down menu choose Pillow Emboss; Technique: Smooth. The other settings will depend on the intricacy of your design. Here I’ve chosen Depth 111%; Direction: Up; Size: 5 and Soften : 4
You will also need to reduce the Opacity of the Highlight and Shadow Modes. In this case 30% and 20% respectively.

You can then add a drop shadow as desired.

Align the pieces to create a strip of lace or use Mehdis free Kaleidescope 2.1 plugin filter found at http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/kaleidoscope.htm to create a doily type element
