ELEMENT: Tearing Paper

This tutorial demonstrates the basic idea of creating torn paper. The effect can be improved upon by adding your own tweaks and experimenting with the technique.
Start by opening the paper you want to tear to your canvas.

Choose the Lasso tool from the tools palette

Draw the tear across your paper – try and keep hand movements smooth – you must keep the mouse button held down at all times – and make sure the selection encompasses all of the edge.

Press delete on the keyboard to create the torn edge and then CTRL+D to get rid of the selection

Create a new layer and position it underneath the torn edge by dragging it as required.

Select the brush tool on the tools palette (or select B on the keyboard)
Choose or load a grunge brush that has a wispy edge. Experiment with the Shape Dynamics and size to reach the look you are after.
For this example I’ve chosen a brush from Dani B – Messy Paint Brushes 2 available in the Scrapbook-Bytes store. Select a color for the tear – here I have chosen the base color of the paper. Paper core may be any color though it is often light.

Brush on the new layer roughly following the edge of the tear, use short strokes to avoid it all looking the same.

Select the torn paper layer and with the eraser – use the same brush at a much smaller size to give the edge of the paper a slight ragged edge.

Select the tear and add texture. You can use a pattern overlay in the Layer Style palette or use the Filter> Texturizer, or a combination of the two. Try to match the texture to that within the paper design.

Select the paper layer and double click to open the Layer Style palette. Select Drop Shadow and change the mode to Overlay and adjust to help the top paper bleed into the tear slightly.

Use the dodge and burn tools to emphasise shape or texture.
Merge the tear and paper layer and add a drop shadow to complete.

Papers used in the tutorial are from the Decorative Grunge Paper pack by shelleyrae designs in the Scrapbook-Bytes store
