You need to have your rulers visible for this tutorial by going to View>Rulers

Your ruler should be showing inch measurements. You can change to inches if needed by pressing CTRL+K on your keyboard, selecting Unit and Rulers and changing Rulers to inches. You can change it back to your preferred measurement option after completing the tutorial.

Create a new canvas 2inch by 2inch at 300ppi - this size allows more flexibility for resizing and retaining quality that a 1x1")

To assist with creating the grid, fill the layer with white (press D to restore default colors and then CTRL + Backspace to fill with white)
Press CTRL+K (or Edit>Preferences) on your keyboard to access the Preferences menu.
Select Guides, Grid & Slices
Enter the values shown below under Grid. I’ve chosen a hot pink color so the grid is easily visible

Go to View>Show>Grid for the grid lines to appear on your canvas

Return to the View menu and select Snap To> and make sure Grid is selected

From the Tool palette select the Line Tool

On the Options Bar make sure you have Fill Pixels selected, enter 2px for the weight, and ensure Anti-alias is checked. Select a foreground color. The default black line is here.

Create a new layer. Position your cursor at the top of the far left edge of the canvas and trace the line to the bottom.
Create a new layer and position your cursor on the grid line and trace the line to the bottom.
Repeat until you have drawn 5 vertical lines. As Snap to Grid is turned on the lines should stay straight

Hold CTRL and click on each line layer to select them all. Right click on any layer and choose Duplicate Layers

With duplicate layers still selected go to Edit> Transform> Rotate 90. The lines will rotate and snap to the grid lines

Go to View> Show> and deselect Grid
Delete the white base layer and then go to Edit> Define Pattern

Name the pattern and click OK

Go to Edit> Preset Manager and select Patterns from the drop down menu. Save your grid as a pattern file.

Create a new canvas at your preferred size. The layer has been filled with a color here to demonstrate
Go to Edit> Fill, choose Pattern and then choose the Grid file you just created

The grid will fill a new layer. You can then change the color of the grid, use a brush to “grunge” it or whatever suits your project.

Alternatively you can use this grid in the Layer Style palette, which will allow you to decrease or increase the size of the grid using Scale and the blend mode.

Should you wish, you can make the scale adjustments in the Layer Style Dialog and then separate it from the layer before applying further edits.
