This tutorial demonstrates how to make a straight ribbon, stitching or similar element into a circle.

Create a canvas at 12x12 inch 300ppi. You can actually use any square canvas but the larger size is more practical for digital scrapbooking.
Select an element from your digital supplies, open the file to your workspace and then use SHIFT and drag to drag it onto your canvas. It is important that the element is centered on the canvas for the result to be successful.

Press CTRL and T on your keyboard to access the Free Transform Options bar. In the Height box, double the percentage to 200% by overtyping.

Select the Move too on the Tools Palette and the Apply on the pop up box that appears.

Now go to Filter> Distort> Polar Coordinates

Choose Rectangular to Polar (you will probably have to zoom in to view the preview of the results) Select OK

Add appropriate shadows and dodge and burn to finish. The rope was also created using the technique.

There can be varying degrees of success with this technique. The determining factor appears to be the original width of the element, as well as just how straight the element is. Edges that are not straight may also result in the failure of the edges to meet. Patterns may also distort, so it may not be a suitable technique in some instances.
