Landscape
Landscape shots are generally the easiest type of picture to take successfully but to create a landscape shot with real impact requires knowledge of several factors.
The time of day affects the mood the picture creates. Early morning light is soft and muted, midday sun is harsh while evening light is warm and creates more intense colours. Early morning and early evening shadows help to give your image depth and perspective.
The use of filters can manipulate the scene for best results. A polariser filter intensifies blue skies while reducing glare. Other types of filters available for both film and digital cameras include those that warm scenes, reduce UV rays and create special effects. Correct exposure is an essential part of successful images. Balancing the light and dark areas can be tricky.
The entire landscape need not always be in perfect focus, though it is common. Using a selective depth of field to draw more attention to an object in the scene is an effective technique.
Thoughtful composition is a large factor for landscape photos. Employing the rule of thirds, and especially placing the horizon on either of the horizontal guides is important. In addition ensuring horizons are straight is essential. Most people tend to take photos with slightly sloping horizons simply because of the movement made when pressing the shutter.
Wide angle lenses allow you to include more of a scene in an image. A wide angle view can increase the impact of a scene. With digital camera’s panoramas are much simpler to achieve than with film models. If your camera has a panoramic mode it often works by allowing you to take the image at the starting point and then for the next shot it provides part of the image as an overlay to allow you to perfectly align the image. The panoramic mode will also lock in exposure and focus to ensure that the conditions remain as similar as possible for the series of photos.
