Create a new transparent document 12x12' at 300ppi
Click on the color picker tool and choose a color you would like to include in the gradient.

Now select the Gradient Tool in the tool palette.

The default gradient is usually your chosen color fading into transparency.

By clicking on the drop down arrow you can access the gradients currently loaded as well as further menu options allowing you to load and save gradient presets.

To create, or edit a gradient you need to click directly on the gradient box to access the Gradient Editor.

To quickly create your own gradient, choose a preset gradient that contains the amount of colors you plan to use in your gradient. For example I have chosen a gradient that contains 3 colors. We can use this as a basis to create a new gradient.

I like the purple and plan to include it in the gradient I am going to create but I need to change the green and orange. To do so click on the green color stop (highlighted in yellow below) and then click on the Color box to access the color picker.

Choose a color, the change will be reflected in the gradient, and click OK.

Now select the orange color stop and choose a third color as above.

You can then move the color stops to change how much of each color shows.

Once you are happy with the mix of colors, give it a name in the box and then press New to add it to the current gradient presets. ( You will need to save the gradients you make in the Preset Manager if you want to keep them) Select Ok to exit the Gradient Editor.

With the gradient tool still selected, your gradient will be visible in the Options Bar.
To add the gradient to your page, click at the middle top of the canvas, and drag to the bottom. When you release the mouse the gradient will be drawn across the document.

You can also click and drag on a diagonal, horizontally or at an angle.

If you find the colors are not blending the way you like, you can make changes by reopening the Gradient editor.
Now add textures, patterns , overlays or brushwork to create a unique paper design.
