Create a simple frame for your photo quickly and easily with Photoshop CS3

Select the photo layer on your layout that you wish to frame.

Double click on the layer to open the Layer Style Dialogue and select Stroke

Choose Position: Inside. Adjust the size to suit your photo. Be aware that while only the inside shows the same width is being added to the outside though it is currently masked. Here I’ve selected 40px.

Change the color to match with your layout by clicking on the Color box and using the color picker.

Then click OK
Right click on the Stroke layer in the layers palette (In CS2 and earlier, right click on the Fx symbol) and choose Create Layer.

This separates the stroke from the photograph – it will be shown on a new layer, though clipped to the photo.

Right click on the clipped layer and choose Release Clipping Mask

The frame is now a separate element in the layout.

You now have a basic frame shape which you can adjust with layer styles or fill with paper as desired.
Double click on the frame layer to open the layer style dialog and choose Bevel and Emboss from the menu at left. For this frame I have made the following adjustments
Style: Inner Bevel; Technique: Smooth; Depth: 246%; Size 27px; Soften: 1

Choose Contour and experiment with the contour options as desired

You can add a texture – here I’ve used Weave 2 from Texture Fill 2 to create a leather look.

Finally add a drop shadow to finish and select OK.
