This tutorial shows you how you can make fuzzy fibers in Photoshop.
Create a new document (File> New) at 12x12 inch 300ppi, choose white as the Background Contents. Press OK then View> Fit on Screen
Create a new layer by clicking on the new layer icon in the layer palette.
First select a color for your fiber. For the purposes of this tutorial we will create a two toned fiber by selecting different foreground and background colors.
Click on the foreground color picker and select # 55b8b3 then OK
Click on the background square and choose # ccd963 then OK (Use white as the background color if you want a single color fiber)
Now choose the brush tool (B) and open the brush palette.
Load the Faux Finish brushes from the flyout menu. Choose replace or append as desired.
If it is not listed, go to Load Brushes and navigate to your Adobe folder (My Computer> C://>Program Files> Adobe> Adobe *version*> Presets> Brushes) and select the Faux Finish brushes.
Select the brush “Veining Feather”
Select Shape Dynamics from the menu at left and make adjustments to the settings as follows:
Size Jitter 40%
Minimum Diameter 9%
Angle Jitter 45%
Control: Direction
Click on Brush Tip Shape and reduce the Spacing to 6% by pushing the slider left
Reduce the diameter of the brush to around 25px
Select Color Dynamics and leave the settings at the default settings.
Hide the brush palette, and then brush across the width of your document to draw the fiber.
Go to View> Actual Pixels so you can view the fiber in detail.
Double click on the fiber layer in the layers palette to open the Layer Style Palette. Select Pattern Overlay from the left hand menu.
Click on the Pattern drop menu icon and then click on the fly out menu arrow. Select Texture Fill 2 from the menu. If you cannot see it then go to Load Patterns and navigate to your Adobe folder (My Computer> C://>Program Files> Adobe> Adobe *version*> Presets> Patterns) and select the Texture Fill 2. Choose either to replace or append as desired.
Change the Overlay Mode to Soft Light, then select Towel from the textures menu
Change the Scale of the pattern to 85%
Your result should be as below
100% view
200% view
Add a drop shadow to finish
You can use these same basic techniques to create a variety of fibers by varying the brush and pattern overlays used.
Draw freehand with the brush or force it to follow shapes or text by using paths.
