When you got your printed film photos back from the lab there was probably a good chance that you had a least one photo where the details were shrouded in deep shadow or just plain dull. In fact it’s likely that even now you have a few photos stored on your hard drive that are dark and you may have been tempted to delete them. In many cases it takes just a few seconds to rescue one of those photo’s so that it can take its’ rightful place in your album. This tutorial will show you how Photoshop’s tools can bring your image into the light.
Quick Fix 2. Shadows and Highlight Tool
Select a photo where the light in the image is uneven or ‘contrasty’. It can be difficult to get a good exposure under sunny conditions when your image is partially shaded. The resulting image has tones that swing from very bright to very dark. In this type of example we don’t want to make the already light areas any lighter but do want to lighten the dark areas to bring out detail and color.
Select Image> Adjustments> Shadow/Highlight
The dialogue opens with a default setting which will usually be a bit extreme.
You will need to adjust the Shadows Amount, usually decreasing until you are pleased with the result.
We can see that in comparison we have gained detail in shadowed areas while not affecting the already light areas giving us a more even exposure.
You have further options in the Shadows/Highlights dialogue. Click on “Show More Options”
This opens additional options to alter the Highlights and make adjustments to color and contrast that may be affected by your edits.
