This tutorial shows you how easy it is to create frayed fabric edges with the help of Eye Candy 5: Texture. First select the paper or image you wish to fray.
Here I’m using a part of a fabric textured paper from Tracey Rivera’s Bella Paper Pack and I’ve cropped a section from it to use as a journaling mat. I’ve copied the piece onto a new canvas and then increased the canvas size to provide a margin around the edge of the mat.
Choose Edit> Duplicate to create a second piece.
Select the bottom layer and launch Effects> Filters> Plug in Filters and browse to find Animal Fur from Eye Candy 5: Texture
On the Settings tab choose Factory Default to reset your options
On the Pattern Tab select Pattern Type: Original Image from the drop down menu. Ensure Draw Outside Selection is chosen.
On the Hairs Tab use settings like those shown below. Depending on your shape you may need to make your own adjustments but you are aiming to have the edges as shown in the closeup. You can adjust the hair length to increase or decrease the size of the fray.
In most cases you will not need to make any adjustments to the Lighting Tab settings.
Select OK to apply the filter, and then Done.
To soften the transition between the two pieces, choose Effects> Edges> Soft and soften the edges by about 3-6 pixels. You may also need to move the top piece slightly.
Flatten the two pieces and add a shadow.
Add some stitching to the piece as a final touch
