Sometimes our photographs need a little help! Here is a quick way to add a bit of “pop” to your colour photograph.

Open your chosen photograph, immediately make a copy of it by going to Window>Duplicate on the Menu Bar and either close the original or you can keep it open as a reference whilst making changes to the copy.

On the Menu Bar go to Layers>Duplicate and make a new layer copy of your photograph. In the Layers Palette click on the arrow to open the list of Layer Blend Modes and select Screen.

Your photograph will now look brighter: here is mine before making any changes. Usually you don’t want the full opacity of the duplicated layer so play with the slider until you get something you like. I decided on an Opacity=65%.

Make another copy of the layer by going to Layers>Duplicate on the Menu Bar. This time change the Blend Mode=Burn: here is mine, and the opacity of the earlier layer, 65%, seems to work well and I’m not going to change it. How the two layers look on the photograph you have chosen may be completely different so play around with the Opacity slider until you get the ”colour pop” that looks right for you!
