Crop a Circle

The Marquee selection tool is found in the tools palette. There are four options but the most commonly used are the Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee tools.
Choose the paper layer that you wish to crop
Right click on the small arrow and choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool. Selecting the Marquee tool brings up the Marquee Options Bar.

To crop a simple circle shape of no particular size, ensure “New Selection” is chosen, Feather is set at 0 and Style Normal.
Position the cursor on the paper, hold down SHIFT and click and drag diagonally. Holding down SHIFT ensures that the circle maintains its correct proportions or the shape will become elliptical (oval). When you release the mouse button the marching ants selection will appear.

If required move the cursor inside the selection and click and drag into position.
With the layer you wish to crop into the circle chosen, use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+J. This will create the circle on a new layer. You can then select and delete or hide the paper layer.

ALTERNATIVELY
Go to Select> Inverse to inverse the selection (or use the shortcut SHIFT+CTRL+I)

Then press DELETE to discard. (CTRL+D to deselect)

If you need the circle to be a particular size, select Fixed size from the Style drop down on the options bar. Enter the size and then click on the paper. The circle selection is created automatically.

Use either CTRL+J or inverse and delete to discard the paper.

To create an oval, do not hold down SHIFT when dragging. Ensure “New Selection” is chosen, Feather is set at 0 and Style Normal. Click on the paper and drag to suit. When you release the mouse button the marching ants selection will appear.
Use either CTRL+J or inverse and delete to discard the excess paper.
