You will need to download and install the free filter Kaleidoscope 2 by Mehdi for this tutorial http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/kaleidoscope.htm before launching DIP

Select a ding or image.
This tutorial uses an image from Dover Publications 1500 Decorative Ornaments.
Your image should be around 3 inches in width or height. NOTE The image needs to be edge to edge on the canvas because of the way the filter works in Digital Image so select Edit> Flatten Image and then Format > stretch or scale to fit your canvas.
Fill your image with your chosen color

Choose Effects> Plugin Filters and browse to find Kaleidoscope 2. Launch the filter and experiment with settings to create the effect you want. Click OK to apply.

Choose Effects> Filters> All Filters and browse to find Emboss : Herbal. Click on Change Advanced Options and use the settings below to apply texture all over the image.

Click Done and Done to apply.
Launch Effects> Filters > All Filters again and browse to Emboss: Herbal
This time use the settings below:

This will provide a lacy texture like the one below. You can experiment with other textures and filters for different looks.

The last step is to apply a bevel. You can do this with EyeCandy if you have it or if not you can use a free beveling software like Almathera beveller available for free download at
http://www.mways.co.uk/prog/plugin.php
Settings used with Almathera

Here is the final piece recolored

Align the pieces to create a strip of the design for your layout
