This tutorial describes one of the many ways to add color or pattern to a paper template.
Create a blank canvas
Fill the layer with a solid color or patterned paper as desired.
Add the paper template (Learn how to create this paper template in the December 2007 issue of Tidbytes!)

Create a new layer and fill with a solid color using ALT + Backspace to fill the layer with your foreground color.

Hold down CTRL and click on the paper thumbnail to create a selection.

Choose the color filled layer and then use CTRL+J to make a copy of the selection from the color layer. Then delete or hide the color fill layer.

Adjust the shaped color layer Blending Mode to suit, Multiply is used here

Merge the paper and color layers and add shadows as appropriate.

The process is the same when using patterned papers.
