This tutorial uses Adobe Photoshop to show you how to make use of the Grunge Patterned 12x12 Paper Overlays found HERE in the Scrapbook-Bytes Store designed by shelleyrae. The tutorial should also work with similar designs and other versions of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

You can download the papers and overlay used in this tutorial by clicking
HERE
Create a new canvas at 12x12 inch (3600x3600pixels) at 300ppi
Choose the solid colored paper as your base and drag it on to your new canvas (hold down SHIFT while you drag to ensure it centers itself)

Open and drag the overlay on top of the paper (hold down SHIFT while you drag to ensure it centers itself)

Option #1 Change the Blend Mode
You can experiment with changing the Blend Modes of the overlay. As the color of the overlay design is black only a few blend modes have any affect on the result.
Change the blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light.

Option # 2 Fill With a Solid Color
You can fill the overlay with a solid color of your choice. Hold down CTRL on the keyboard and click on the Overlay image thumbnail to create the selection “marching ants”

Choose a fill color by clicking on the color well and pressing OK

Use the keyboard shortcut ALT and Backspace to fill the overlay with the selected color. In some instance you may want to repeat the keyboard sequence to increase the color fill.

You can leave it as is or choose a different blend mode to create another look.

Option # 3 Fill with another paper.
For another unique look, fill the overlay with any paper using a clipping mask. You can use a solid or patterned paper in a contrasting or complementary color.
Choose the patterned paper and drag it on to the canvas above the overlay layer (hold down SHIFT while you drag to ensure it centers itself)

Either right click on the layer and choose Create Clipping Mask or use the keyboard shortcut (CTRL+ALT+G)

You can then experiment with blend modes for unique results by first merging the overlay and clipped layers
