While you can brush shapes on to your layout and then apply a layer style, it is considerably easier to be able to see the effect that the style will have while you are painting.

Create a New Layer
Select the brush on the tools palette (B) and then choose a brush shape – here I am using simple leaf shapes. Make your adjustments to the diameter, spacing and any other option you desire to create the effect you are looking for.

Select or load a layer style (CLICK HERE to learn more about the basics of Layer styles). The layer style used here was downloaded from the adobe exchange (DLewin_stones)
With the new layer selected, click on the layer style you wish to use. The fx symbol will appear.

Now create the brush work on your canvas

Create a new layer, change the brush and/or layer style to paint again with a different effect.
