You can separate shadows from the objects easily in Photoshop CS2. This will then allow you to create effects such as the popular bent frame look.
Add the frame or element to your layout.
Add the drop shadow using the layer style palette (right click on the layer and choose Layer Style) Adjust the parameters as required and then press Ok to apply.
Click on the tiny arrow next to the fx symbol on the layer you applied the shadow to, then right click on the Drop shadow text and choose Create layer
This splits the shadow from the object – if a pop up window appears just choose OK.
You can now manipulate the shadow or the item independently of each other to create effects such as bent frames.
