ELEMENT: How to Create Torn Paper in Paint Shop Pro X
This tutorial will help you create paper with a torn edge using Paint Shop Pro.
1. Begin by opening the paper you wish to tear (File > Open). Create a duplicate of the paper (Shift+D) and then close the original.

2. If this is a .jpg image, you will need to convert this background layer into a raster layer (Layers > Promote Background Layer).
3. Activate the Freehand Selection Tool (it looks like a rope or lasso.)

4. In this step, we will be “tearing” our paper. Click and drag a ragged selection along one edge of the paper. Be sure to make your selection as random and natural as possible.

5. Press the Delete key on your keyboard.

6. If you like, you can temporarily add a dark color on its own separate layer below your paper to help you see the torn edge better (this dark color will be deleted later—this is only used to help you see your edge better).

7. Click on the Paint Brush (B) and choose a contrasting color. For this example, I’m using white.

8. The brush settings will vary from paper to paper. You’ll need to experiment to find the right look. These are the settings I used for this example.

9. Create a new raster layer and position it so that it lies between the paper you are tearing and the black background.

10. Using the Paint Brush, randomly paint the torn portion of your paper. Can’t seem to paint the torn edge perfectly? Break out some REAL paper and tear it—use it as a reference to see how the fibers appear.

11. If your paper doesn’t already have a texture to it, let’s give it one now (Effects > Texture Effects > Texture).

12. Merge the textured paper and the torn edge into one layer (right-click on the layer containing the paper > Merge > Merge Down).
13. Let’s soften the edges up a bit to give it a more realistic look. Find the Soften Brush.

14. Choose a soft-edged brush with a very low opacity.

15. Click and drag the Soften Brush over the torn edge. If the effect is too strong, hit Undo (Ctrl+Z) and change the opacity value.

16. Use the Burn Brush to add some darker areas to the torn edge for a more realistic look.

17. You can now delete the dark background layer.

18. Your torn paper can be saved as a .PNG file to use on future layouts.

Have fun experimenting!
