You can use any type of image as a basis for creating your own color swatch, including photographs. Naturally the internet is a rich source of imagery for creating swatches. Look for color combinations that may appeal in images of fabrics, wallpaper and clothing.
Open your image to Photoshop.
Choose Image> Mode> Indexed Color
From the pop up menu that appears select the default Local (Selective). The color amount will determine how many colors appear in the swatch. You can preview the colors that will be sampled in your image based on your color number choice by having preview checked. Select Forced: None and deselect Transparency. Leave the Options as default.
Select OK. You will most likely not see any change in the image.
Choose Image> Mode> Color Table and a color swatch will open based on your image.
Choose Save and name the swatch distinctively. You can save swatches to the default Photoshop folder or any other location on your hard drive eg My Documents> PhotoshopExtras> Swatches
After saving choose Cancel on the color table.
From the swatches palette, (Window>Swatches) select Load (or replace) Swatches
Browse to the where you saved the swatch, from the Format drop down menu select Color Table *ACT, then select the swatch name and Load.
The swatch is now available for your use.
You can further refine this palette by right clicking on a color square and choosing Delete Swatch. This will delete only that color square from the current swatch.
