Create your curved border using the tutorial HERE
Go to the Path Tool and click on the Path Edit Tool in the dropdown box:
Click the toggle button that will now be in the top menu. This will show the path of your shape. With the toggle button in the “on” position, go back down to the Path Tool and choose the Path Drawing Tool to add your cutout. This will make the “Mode” change to “Continue Draw”. Check to make sure your upper menu looks like the one pictured below:
Now just go into the Shape drop down box and chose the shape of cutout you’d like. I’ll choose the circle for this tutorial.
Draw out the circle to wherever you would like to place it on your border. It should also be in path form. Don’t worry about getting it exactly where you want it, you can move it later if you need to.
If you need to move it, click on one of the lines (do not click on the red points) and drag the shape to it’s new location. I’m moving it up a bit and to the right so that it is more centered.
Click the toggle button and your border should look similar to the one pictured before.
If it isn’t, be sure to check your tool settings to make sure that your Shape Tool is set for an Even-Odd Fill. With your Path Drawing Tool selected, click on panel, then options.
Now, just like any other border, you can fill it with your choice of background or paper. The circle shape would be a good place for some journaling, or even a photo. Be creative!
Some variations that can be done following the same basic steps would be to add some small circles along the edge of the border as decoration.
Follow the procedure above, but this time add a small circle. Switch to the Edit Mode again and hit the Duplicate button to make a second circle.
Keep doing this, lining them each up where you would like them to be.
Click the toggle button occasionally and you will see your progress.
Each of these circles and the background itself are separate objects and can be moved around separately. If you click on the outside of the shape, you can “unselect” all the objects and then click on one of the lines of the object you want to work on to reselect it if you need to go back and edit one of your objects. You can fill this with the paper of your choice and add a drop shadow and it will look like you have cutouts in your border!
If you want to add any of these to your shape gallery so that it can be used again and again, just go to Object/Copy to Object Library and give it a name and choose which gallery you would like it saved in. Make sure to do this before adding any kind of fill or else the object will no longer be in path form.
Here are some more examples of what you can do with these cutouts, as you can see, the possibilities are endless!
And here are some of them filled with paper and with the drop shadows added so you can see the kind of effect they will have on your pages.
